DHL/Yodel

Fri 1st Apr 2011

Workers at the DHL site in Risley near Warrington were recently given the news that following the sale of the site to logistics company Yodel, this depot was to effectively close and most of the jobs on site were to become redundant.

Through the GMB Shop Stewards on site and the GMB Officer responsible, the Reach Out team were asked if they could offer any support to workers facing redundancy.

Within a matter of days the GMB Reach Out bus was on site  and the process began by assessing the learning needs of anyone who was faced with losing their job.

Continued discussions with Stewards, ULRs and management have led to learners beginning iTQ courses, JobCentre Plus offering to support workers with training on forklift trucks and as much practical advice and guidance for workers in this difficult situation as possible.

Senior Project Worker Dave Flanagan said, "We are seeing this kind of situation more and more often.  Although we would prefer not to have to deal with these kind of negotiations we have built up some good experience of helping people who are in this position.  With training providers facing funding cuts this has been harder than usual but we will continue to do our utmost to support workers at the site."
