GMB ULR Changing Lives

Fri 1st Feb 2013

We recently received this fantastic piece about the difference that GMB ULRs make on a day to day basis.

GMB member Steve Howcroft has been a caretaker for Tameside Council for many years.  He was responsible for the safety, maintenance and cleanliness of Loxley House.  Steve was approached by his GMB ULR, Linda Mercer, who thought he might be able to benefit from some basic skills training.  However Steve felt that he would not be able to complete the courses.

With a little support and encoragement from Linda he enrolled on both Literacy and Numeracy courses.  Steve went on to complete these 2 courses and soon after embarked on an iTQ course at level 2.

It was while he was working towards this qualification that he got in touch with Linda to say that there was a job that he wanted to apply for but didn't have the confidence to do so. To assist with this Steve attended a GMB Reach Out course for confidence building and applying for jobs as part of an ongoing Response to Redundancy scheme.  As part part of the course he also received one to one advice and guidance regarding job applications and interview skills. Further assistance was given in the creation of a CV and covering letter for the job he was interested in.

With renewed confidence Steve attended the interview and was successful in securing the post which will see him assisting people in gaining new life skills.  Anything from learning to iron to gaining the kind of qualifications that Steve has done himself.

He said "I have recently applied for and been appointed to a new and better paid job. This would not have been possible without the IT qualifications I recently gained.  The tutor was knowledgeable and patient and once I'd gotten over the 'I'll never be able to do that' attitude I really enjoyed my lessons. I would strongly advise anyone who gets the chance to go on a GMB Reach Out course.  Go for it!! I'm sure you won't regret it"
