Reach Out Visits Congress

Fri 11th Jun 2010
The Reach Out team were present at the GMB National Congress in Southport to display the fantastic achievements of ULRs and the project across the North West & Irish region to date.
Over the 4 days of the conference a large number of delegates visited the stand and on Monday 7 June the Learning Routes bus was parked outside the venue and received a great deal of interest - not least from Labour Party Leader candidate David Miliband, pictured here visiting the bus following the hustings meeting held at Congress.
Senior Project Worker, Dave Flanagan, also had the opportunity to propose a motion to Congress regarding the recognition of ULRs within the GMB Rule Book and the need for a campaign to ensure that Union Learning Funds are maintained under the new government.
The motion was referred to the Central Executive Committee for further discussion while the overall impact of the Reach Out project and others around the country is reviewed.
The feedback from those visiting the stand was that while the learning agenda is not always high on everyone's list of priorities it is clearly an important part of the union offering to members. Colleagues from other regions who had lost ULF support were keen to maintain the established ULR network in an effort to continue to drive workplace learning.
In the North West & Irish Region the GMB Reach Out Project continues to recruit, develop and support ULRs in an effort to promote workplace learning throughout the Region.
