Sefton - The Next Generation

Sefton - The Next Generation

Thu 10th Feb 2011

GMB Reach Out has been backing the promotion of young apprenticeship courses and schemes throughout Sefton Borough.  In conjunction with local training providers the Project Team visited 8 different schools and colleges across the borough as part of National Apprenticeship Week highlighting the campaign of the TUC - "Apprenticeships are Union Business"

The GMB Reach Out bus was on hand at each venue for the year 10 and 11 students to come aboard and begin thinking about their learning journey beyond their GCSEs.

Local apprenticeship providers Asset Training, NWTC, NWCS, Hugh Baird, Southport College, Intraining and Michael John took the opportunity to talk to the youngsters about apprenticeships covering subjects from joinery and construction, through to hairdressing and make up.  All visitors to the bus were given plenty of information to help them choose their future career paths as they approach this important time in their lives.

GMB North West & Irish Regional Education Officer Alfie Jones commented " Apprenticeships seem to be making a comeback and rightly so.  Union Learning Reps have a key role to play in raising awareness to employers of the need to embrace the development and training of young and mature apprentices."

Project Worker Pete Callaghan said "This has been an exciting new development in the use of the bus,  getting out and about within the Sefton community highlighting the benefits of learning at work to the next generation has been very important and rewarding."
